5 Easy Ways to Improve Cognition

  1. Keep a Routine. As best as possible, keep your daily routine the same - wake up/ bed times, meal and medication times, social activities, etc. This makes it easier to keep track of what you have already done and what you still need to do for the day.

  2. Stay Organized. Keep important items (i.e. phone, wallet, keys, documents, checkbook, etc) in the same place every day so you know where to find them. Use a calendar, whether on paper or on a phone or computer to keep track of appointments and upcoming events.

  3. Reduce Distractions. Try to only do one thing at a time without background noises. Avoid tasks such as using the stove or filling your medications box when there are distractions (i.e. tv, phone calls, music, conversation, etc). Turn off the tv/ radio/ phone ringer when completing important tasks such as paying bills or scheduling appointments.

  4. Reduce Stress. Stress impacts our ability to think clearly so reducing factors that are causing you stress can help with memory and concentration. Some active ways to reduce stress include taking a walk or bike ride, cleaning your home so you are more organized, and eating nutritious foods.

  5. Exercise Your Brain. One of the most important ways to improve your cognition is by keeping your brain active. Find something of interest to you and use that as a brain exercise such as board games, word games, puzzles, reading, sewing, crafting, model building, learning a new language, and so much more! If you get bored doing a crossword puzzle, then you won't stick to it, so find an activity you enjoy and challenge yourself.
